It is grown in the lower foothills and midhills of the Himalayans up to altitudes of 4000 feet, mostly in Nepal, India and China. It is well known for its traditional medicinal uses and is commonly used as a hair cleanser.

Reetha is a versatile Ayurvedic herb which is antiallergic and antibacterial in nature. Its skin is highly valued in the rural areas as natural shampoo and is now being increasingly used in shampoos, face washes, etc. It is also mildly antiseptic and has detoxifying effects.
